Applying Putty & Sanding

Putty and sanding are two important techniques in scale modeling that can help you achieve a smooth and seamless finish on your model. Here is a step-by-step guide to applying putty and sanding in scale modeling:

  1. Prepare the surface: Clean the model’s surface thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. This will ensure that the putty adheres appropriately to the surface.
  2. Apply putty: Using a putty knife or spatula, apply a thin layer of modeling putty to the model’s surface. Cover any cracks, gaps, or seams in the surface. You can also use a fine-tip brush to apply the putty in tight or hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Let the putty dry: Allow the putty to dry completely. The drying time will vary depending on the type of putty you are using, but it typically takes about 20-30 minutes.
  4. Sand the surface: Once the putty has dried, you can start sanding the surface. Use a sanding block or sandpaper to remove any excess putty and smooth the surface. Start with coarse sandpaper (e.g., 80-grit) to remove any rough spots, then switch to finer sandpaper (e.g., 120-grit) to further smooth the surface.
  5. Repeat the process if necessary: Depending on the complexity of the model, you may need to repeat the process of applying putty and sanding multiple times. Be patient and take your time to ensure a smooth and seamless finish.

Note: When sanding, be careful not to sand too much and remove too much material, as this can affect the model’s overall shape. Also, always wear a dust mask when sanding to protect your lungs from inhaling fine dust particles.
