The renowned Curtiss C-46 Commando was the largest twin-engine aircraft to see operational use with the USAAF. It was widely used in the Pacific theatre during World War II where it served as both a cargo and troop transport aircraft. The C-46 also had a long military career, serving as late as the 1960’s with operational units in the United States and many other countries.
The 1/72 scale Williams Brothers model kit was used for this project, along with the Squadron C-46 Commando Vacuform aftermarket Canopy. The canopy that came with the plastic model airplane is very poor quality and several parts required a great deal of filling and sanding. The paint scheme consists of a soft dividing fade between Olive Drab and Neutral Gray. To achieve the worn metal look, the propeller blades were first painted Flat Aluminum and, after a drying period, were coated Flat Black with Yellow tips. Although the fittings required careful attention, the final look is very authentic. In all, the C-46 Commando was a fun project. Enjoy the images.
