WELCOME TO THE SCALE MODEL AIRCRAFT GALLERY
|
The Curtiss C-46 Commando was the heaviest and largest twin-engine aircraft to see operational use with the USAAF. It was widely used in the Pacific theatre during World War II where it served as both a cargo and troop transport aircraft. The C-46 continued to be active in the military service as late as the 1960’s, with units in the United States and many other foreign countries. Airliners in different parts of the world also employed this aircraft for commercial use.
I used the 1/72 scale, Williams Brothers kit for this project, along with the Squadron C-46 Commando Vacuform aftermarket Canopy. The canopy that came with the model is very poor quality and many parts required a great deal of filling, sanding and patience. The paint scheme consists of a soft dividing fade between Olive Drab and Neutral Gray. To achieve the worn metal look, the propeller blades were first painted Flat Aluminum and, after a drying period, were coated Flat Black with Yellow tips. Although the fittings required careful attention, the final presentation is very pleasant. In all, the C-46 Commando was a fun project. Enjoy the images.
